Dragon Sparking Codex: Rip Scale-Rend

Posted on September 28, 2026 by Nathan McWilliams

Rip is the main character of Dragon Sparking. He is a Dragonoid from the Draco Cluster. Rip is 19 years old as of the events of Heart of a Dragon.

Born to Ken and Dawn Scale-Rend, he has always idolized his parents and their chosen path of protecting the people of the Inter-Galactic Union from Anomalies that disrupt peace and potentially endanger life. Even when his parents vanished, he became even more determined to do them proud.

Rip became a Scout Ranger for the IGU both in order to protect their values and to find out what happened to them one day.

Rip’s biology as a Dragonoid affords him some extra durability from his scale like feathers, as well as the ability to exhale fire.

Throwback Thursday: Thought Edition

Once, I nearly named Dragon Sparking “Tales of the Bold” after the power metal song by Iron Savior. It wasn’t until 2008 that I landed on the name “Dragon Sparking” and of course it wasn’t until 2018 that I even began to publish the first version of the webcomic.

I had many stops and starts along this path but here I am, still going.

You can check out that song here:
